Food Microbiology

A microbiological examination of food products reveals the contamination of micro-organisms like bacteria, viruses, yeasts and molds etc. The consumption of such contaminated food may cause foodborne illness. The sources of contamination varies from ingredients, food contact and non-food contact surfaces as well as food handling.

It is the responsibility of the food manufactures' to maintain food safe environment and produce safe food.

Presence of pathogens in food has a major impact on manufacturers' market status and reputation. The recall of contaminated food is an expensive process for any manufacturer and which ultimately destroy the brands' reputation.

Based on the requirements, different kinds of testing are available.

Ingredients quality as well as hygiene of production facility are determined by evaluating INDICATOR MICROORGANISMS like:

Aerobic Total Plate Count

Anaerobic Total Plate Count

Aerobic Sporeformers

Anaerobic Sporeformers

Psychrophilic Bacteria

Acid Producing Bacteria

Bacillus species

Enterobacteriaceae

Coliforms and E.coli

Clostridium perfringens

Yeast and Mold

The some of the major pathogens in foods are as follows

Salmonella species

E.coli O157:H7

Shiga Toxin Producing E. coli (STEC)

Listeria species

Listeria monocytogenes

Bacillus cereus

Staphylococcus aureus

Campylobacter species

WE CAN HELP YOU:

We have a state-of-the-Art ISO 17025 facility and expertise to provide testing services to all food manufacturers. We uses molecular as well as conventional methods which are approved by CFIA, FDA and USDA.

Microbiological testing have different applications:

Product(s) testing: It ensures that the ingredients are safe and comply with regulations. It also ensures that products available for consumption are safe.

Water testing: It ensures that the facility water for hand washing, ice maker, sanitation etc. are free of contamination.

Environmental monitoring: Environmental swabbing and consequent testing is required to monitor the cleanliness of the surfaces as well as the effectiveness of sanitation process.

Air safety: Proper evaluation of the facility air as well as compressed air can determine the presence of airborne microorganisms which may contaminate food products and production surfaces.

 Care about Environment

In an industrialized society, a wide variety of contaminants are released to the environment every day from residential, commercial and industrial sources. It may not be all but some of these substances have the potential to impinge on human health or the environment. Their presence is signaled by the growth of microorganisms known as indicator organisms and by analyzing these indicator organisms; the impact of the contaminant can be evaluated.

Water sources are prone to contamination when it comes in contact with different kind discharges. The water in public use area can be contaminated with fecal discharges from birds, other animals as well as human beings.

Fungal and bacterial growth on building and storage materials is one of the most common indoor air biological contaminants. Most indoor environments including offices, schools, residential high-rises and single family homes can cause a health hazard to occupants of the building or to construction workers during a renovation or demolition. Building materials such as Gypsum Board, Wood, Plywood, Roof sheathing, Acoustic ceiling tiles and Oriented Strand Board; Other non-building related materials can also be source for concern including; boxes, papers, books, fabrics, garments, etc. are very susceptible to yeast and mold growth due to their intrinsic properties. Microbial contamination, although not specifically regulated, is a topic that is seriously addressed by most regulatory bodies and routinely enforced by Health Departments and Ministries of Labor.

Quest Research And Analytics Inc. is equipped with modern instruments and technologies to analyze these indicator microorganisms. Contact us for further information.
